What to Pack for a Creative Residency in Bali

Pack for two facts about Bali: it is humid, and it already has almost everything. Get those right and the rest is easy.

Power first, because it strands people. Bali runs on 230V with Type C and F sockets, the round two-pin European kind. Most laptop and phone chargers handle the voltage, but bring a couple of adapters and assume the good ones sell out in town. A small power strip turns one adapter into many and is worth the space.

Protect your gear from the damp. Humidity is the real threat to cameras, lenses, and hard drives, not theft. Bring silica packs, a dry pouch for anything with a sensor, and at least one backup drive. If your work lives on a laptop, it should live in two places by the end of week one.

Bring the tools that are personal and hard to replace. Your laptop and its charger. Headphones that actually block sound. The specific pens, brushes, or notebooks you are loyal to. A camera if images are part of how you work. These are the things worth the baggage allowance.

Leave the bulk at home. Ubud has art shops, stationery, canvases, hardware, and a market for almost anything you forgot. Buying supplies here is cheap and part of the fun, so do not haul a studio across the planet. Pack the irreplaceable, source the ordinary.

Dress for warm days and surprising evenings. Light natural fabrics, things that dry fast, and one layer for cool nights in the hills and over-cool cafés. Sandals you can walk in. If you plan to visit temples, pack one set of clothes that covers shoulders and knees.

Watch the season. The wet months, roughly November to March, bring hard afternoon rain that can soak a bag in minutes. A light rain shell and a waterproof cover for your laptop bag save a bad day. The dry months are easier, but the sun is stronger than it feels.

A few small things punch above their weight: a refillable water bottle, mosquito repellent, basic medicine you trust, and any prescription you cannot easily explain at a pharmacy. Bring enough of the last one for the whole stay.
